In some countries, many more people are choosing to live alone nowadays than in the past. Do you think this is a positive or negative development.
Include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience to back up your answer.
Write a minimum of 250 words.
Sample Band 7 Answer
In recent years, most people, especially in developed nations, opt for independent living. In my opinion, this trend has bought both positive and negative implications in equal measures.
To begin with, sole dwellers can be seen beneficial for both personal and for broader economic reasons. On individual level, person learns how to survive independently, emotionally and financially. They learn many life skills like doing household chores, paying utility bills, which help them to take critical decision themselves, consequently making them self-reliant. On the economic prospective, this trend leads to surge in demand for houses, thereby boosting the construction industry, which in turn leads to good prices for real estate market. This will result in economic growth of a country.
However, living alone has some pitfalls which cannot be ignored. Quite evident one is lack of emotional support when required because when a person needs family support, there is on one to support him. This leads to frustrations, isolation and in worst cases, depression .Moreover, financial expenses have to be borne by person alone and hence they have to work really hard to make both ends meet, which further leads to a stressful life. From economic view, continuous demand in accommodation puts extra pressure on scarce land resources, which in turn leads to surge in property prices. This is a ripple effect which is never ending ad one problem leads to another one.
To sum up, in my opinion, increase in one person households have both positive and negative outcomes on the individual as well on the economical level, and efforts must be done to maintain a balance between demand and supply so that the advantages of living alone is not wiped out by psychological problems and exorbitant property prices

TA – You have dealt with the problem well but because you don’t commit yourself to an opinion you mainly write a narrative. The question specifically asks for your opinion, not for you to consider the pros & cons// CC – I suppose there are 4 paragraphs? Leave a space in the exam. It’s unfortunate you use “leads to” 5x so a strength becomes a weakness (and also means G lacks variety)// LR – excellent ( one ‘typing error’?)// G – articles are a problem plus a number of careless slips (mostly missing “s”) which means a lot of sentences contain an error

//CC – 6
//LR – 8 (“economical” means I can’t give 9)
//G – 6 (careless)
//Overall = 7.0.
