Some people believe it is good to share as much information as possible in scientificic research, business and the academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience to back up your answer.
Write a minimum of 250 words.
Sample Band 6 Answer
A popular belief is that, it is beneficial to expose maximum amount of data to public so that they can keep themselves updated with scientific advancement or organisational process as well as their educational field. While, many still believe it is important to keep some of these data discreet for security purpose. This essay agrees with the significance to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive database.
We cannot deny the fact that, not all kinds of research based works are safe to be accessed by common people as they can be involved with national or international safety. For example, a scientific research could be carried upon the latest development of the weapons used for defence technique of a country. Therefore public access to those reports maybe catastrophic as someone can use those for spreading terror or vandalism. In addition, misuse of any information would be threatening towards any organisation. For instance, if all business policies are shared with mass people then the competitors of that business can cause many troubles which may cut down the profit percentage.
Nevertheless, people are required to be familiar with many scientific inventions, business process and academic facilities for their overall well-being like medical advancements, stock-exchange status and improved educational facilities. But this fact does not outweigh the advantages of not sharing sensitive informations.
On the whole, it is always best to evaluate the purpose of informations before deciding what would be harmless to share freely with public and what is needed to keep under restriction.

Examiner Feedback
The use of “the public” in the introduction changes the focus of the question slightly. Why do you need to give your opinion in the intro? TA – para 2 is strong in terms of examining the topic but para 3 is not adequate and places to much emphasis on the general public rather than national security & information that is sensitive for businesses. Your discussion is rather general but the conclusion is clear// CC – there is a lack of cohesion and the fact that para 3 consists of only 2 sentences suggests a lack of development//LR – “common people”? “mass people”? I suppose you mean information being in “the public domain”. But there is adequate collocation// G – “information” is uncountable,as is “research” (so no article). This obvious weakness throughout the writing has to limit the band. Otherwise, there are only a couple of other minor errors
So, I’d say:
//TA – 6
// CC – 6 (a bit strict?)
// LR – 7
// G – 7 (strong)
//Overall = 6.5 (7.0 if you are very lucky). (“may be”, not “maybe”).
