Sample Band 6 Answer

This is true that technology has altered the way people communicate, and this trend has brought various changes in different types of relationships. In my opinion, there are both advantages and drawbacks.

Technology has made several impacts on relationships in different aspects, such as education, business and social life. Firstly, the relationship between teachers and students used to be closed because the process of learning was physically limited within a venue, but now we can study via internet such as searching articles on google website or watching videos on youtube. Interaction would seldom be involved and hence ‘teachers’ almost are disappeared. Secondly, cooperation between companies would also be reformed. Business could be completed through emails or video meeting. Comparing with the situation in the past, businessmen had to make appointments and discuss the details face to face. Finally, social life style has enormously affected as well. People nowadays communicate via whatsapp and facebook instead of making phone call, and they prefer sharing their daily life on instagram to meeting friends in reality.

I believe this phenomenon has led both positive and negative outcomes. Regarding the advantage, these technological applications have shortened the distance, for instance, if I travel overseas, I can still keep in touch with my family and friends without time and space limitation, I can share what I have experienced with them immediately. On the contrary, people get used to interact with others via screen but not a real person, they would gradually lose confidence to talk to people face to face and this would hinder their social skills.

In conclusion, new technology have brought myriad changes to people’s interaction. This has improved the communication method but also has raised some problems.

Examiner Feedback

TA – I find it difficult to identify the positive and negative points. Use of carrier nouns would help. You justify your view but I don’t think an examiner with pile of 20 papers to mark would be very patient. 7 requires your position to be clear throughout// CC – “firstly/secondly/finally” in the same paragraph = mechanical.There is some use of cohesion but I feel that is more luck than judgement// LR – there is just enough strong collocation// G – it is unusual for a “5” to use the passive, conditionals and be correct in the use of most verb patterns but your errors (slips?) are numerous.I feel that the problem is that it is written in a ‘spoken’ style of ”utterances’ rather than sentence clauses. As such punctuation could limit the G band and the missing capital letters certainly would. Article & plural/countable/uncountable noun errors can still be 6. But FCE level grammar practice along with “IELTS Language Practice” – Vince & French (Macmillan) is the right level to practice with (Vince has a FCE grammar book too)
So, I’d say:
//TA – 6
// CC – 6
// LR – 7
// G – 6 (5 if I don’t ignore the missing capital letters)
//Overall = 6.0.
You can see that I feel TA & CC are the weak area, as Michael initially did (if would/could confuses meaning, it’s TA that suffers. If the reader can’t understand a sentence that;s G or possibly spelling.
