Sample Band 6 Answer

International aid is a financial or technical help given by one country’s government to another country to assist social and economic development or to respond to a disaster in a recipient country. Some people oppose the international aid because they tend to believe that the money goes misspent by the recipient countries. I believe that the allocation of aid like money, equipments and services should not be withheld because they are essential for overall development of a country.

Basically, humanitarian aid serves several purposes in recipient countries. Firstly, its role is vital for recovery of those countries which are going through/suffering from a natural disaster like earthquake, flood or civil unrest. Life saving support and emergency shelters help the victims to cope up with the challenges of homelessness, food shortage and bring their lives back to normal. For example, in the past, international aid helped the victims of Tsunami and earthquake to recover rapidly and re-build their homes.

Secondly, international aid is beneficial for poor/middle-income countries, as it stead fasts social campaigns related to health, education and provides classrooms, vaccination, access to hygiene education and basic sanitation. On a national security level, it helps to combat terrorism in a country, decreases poverty. Hence, it has important role to strengthen good governance and the economy too.

Moreover, foreign aid is important to foster a conducive diplomatic relationship between the donor and the recipient countries, by moving the impoverished countries towards the democratic fundamentals. Also, it attributes to promote peace and security globally, by opening up the possibility of cultural, social and economic interaction between countries, thereby easing tension.

On the other hand, the opposition to international aid is rooted in the elements like, any corrupt system in recipient country can cause the money to be misused on unintended destinations, but these pitfalls don’t overshadow the benefits. This issue can be tackled by tight regulations on corrupt system and pressure on recipient country to lead the system on a right path.

In conclusion, foreign aid really makes a difference to people living in poverty. It provides access to basic necessities and provides people essential conditions for living a peaceful and secure life, although the abuse of international aid can be addressed in strict ways.

Examiner Feedback

“Explain your view” doesn’t seem to be typical T2 wording. And there are 2 errors in the question statement that can cause confusion. The language use in the essay is better than in the question! TA – you have written an essay on humanitarian aid. Where do you exactly answer the question of “moral obligation”. You don’t mention morality or sense of duty anywhere. You only touch on “misspent money”// CC – it is difficult to make out paragraphing. 6? Which model do you use that recommends a 6 para approach. You have written too much & lost control. And beginning paragraphs with “Firstly/Secondly/Moreover” is ‘mechanical’// LR – really good with a only a few slips. But how much of the vocabulary is actually relevant to the question?// G – it’s mostly accurate but mostly statements and description. How many sentences begin with “It + present simple verb…”? What complex sentence structures do you use? The question doesn’t help!
So, I’d say:
//TA – 5 (that’s what I feel an examiner with a pile of 20+ papers to mark would do
// CC – 6
// LR – 7 (easily 8 but off topic)
// G – 7 (I’d like to say 8)
//Overall = 6.0 (it deserves more but I don’t feel you address the question).
