Countries are becoming more and more similar because people are able to buy the same products anywhere in the world. Is it a positive or negative development? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write a minimum of 250 words.

Sample Band 7 Answer

It is true that because of globalization and the availability of branded products globally, nations around the globe have appeared to look alike. While there are many benefits of globalization, I would argue that it is overall a negative development.

The establishment of multinational companies gives lots of benefits. Firstly, it provides job opportunities to a huge number of local people who would otherwise have had hard time to get a secure job. Secondly, it ensures the costumers that the same quality of goods are available irrespective of the geographical diversity. Lastly, making branded products available globally means that new styles and designs of products are available letting the costumers keep up with the latest trend in fashion. For instance, when there outlets of ‘Rebook’ brand in different countries, people have the opportunity to purchase the same quality of products, and even of the latest model.

On the other hand, I believe that being able to purchase the same products globally has its drawbacks. The sales of locally made products are bound to fall as they cannot compete with the huge multi-national companies that tend to invest thousands, if not millions of dollars in advertisement campaigns globally. The decline in the trade of local products in long term also translates into loss of hundreds of years of culture and loss of heritage of that locality. A Norwegian research has recently shown that the establishment of outlets selling ‘Nike’ caps in the state of Punjab in India has created such a craze in the youths there that they have abandoned wearing their traditional turbans; thus harshly affecting their culture.

In conclusion, while I recognize the possible benefits of having multinational companies and the facility to buy same quality of products worldwide, I consider it to be a negative development.

TA – you state your opinion in the introduction strongly and then argue against yourself in para 2. What is the reader supposed to think? In fact the points in para 2 are very convincing and you do not give any indication why you disagree. So your position is not clear throughout the essay. Is the reader seriously supposed to believe that a Norwegian organisation carried out research in the Punjab and turbans are being discarded?// CC – para 2 is too ‘mechanical’ while para 3 is much better in the use of cohesion, so I feel the band is ‘borderline// LR – it’s a pity about the spelling error (costumers) and ” harshly affecting ” doesn’t sound ‘right’// G – I see one missing article and that can accepted as a slip but “A Norwegian research” can’t be forgiven

So, I’d say:
//TA – 7 (I think I might be being kind)
// LR – 7 (just)
// LR – 8
// G – 8
//Overall = 7.5 (7.0 if you have a VERY strict examiner).
