Sample Band 7 Answer
It is true that several language become extinct each year. While some people believe that it makes our life simpler and easier, I do not agree with this opinion and argue that preservation of languages is important.
People have opinion that dying out of less used languages is a positive development. This helps develop a particular language, say for instance, English, gain more popularity making communication easier. Having a specific tongue that is understood by all means that there is very less likelihood of being misunderstood and that there are virtually no barriers to expression of thoughts or ideas.
In contrast, I believe that language is more than just a form of communication; it is enriched with history, culture creating a taste for other languages as well. Firstly, dialects spoken in a geographical territory can help us understand about the past of the region. In case the language dies out, it becomes next to impossible to understand the manuscripts that could possibly be found during research and extraction in future. In addition, the similarity in scripts and languages reinforce to understand each other’s’ cultures. For example, the same Devnagari font used in the different regions of the Indian sub-continent has helped us have a deeper understanding of the evolution of similar culture in the region. Finally, having multiple languages means that there are variations in speech and the world does not look alike. This creates a sense of curiosity among people having different tongues. A Swedish study has shown that the more interactions between people of European nations is attributable to the variation in their languages.
In conclusion, while there are arguments that having a universal language is more beneficial, I disagree with the view and believe that lingual diversity has its benefits and should be preserved.
This is the answer is written by the real student who appeared on IELTS exam and got band 7 for this answer. now, let’s us look forward to the essay feedback given by the IELTS Examiner.
TA – a convincing response that could be more fully developed (but that would mean a longer answer)// CC – There is some cohesion but too much reliance on basic conjunctions in para 3 (perhaps this should be a 5 para essay)// LR – some odd word choice but plenty of collocation and a few really good phrases (next to impossible /creates a sense of curiosity among people having different tongues)// G – you use some very sophisticated language but there are slips (several language) and clumsy clauses (hat the more interactions between people of European nations )
So, I’d say:
//TA – 8 (?)
// CC – 7 (just)
// LR – 8 (just)
// G – 7 (the potential for improvement)
//Overall = 7.5
