Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.
What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?
Include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience to back up your answer.
Write a minimum of 250 words.
Sample Band 7 Answer
While some think that universities ought to offer graduates with practical knowledge and skills that can help them later on in their working lives solely, others reject this notion , claiming that universities should merely provide access to knowledge for its own sake disregarding its usefulness to an employer or not. In my opinion universities main role is to give access to both type of knowledge depending on the type of the enrolled scholars and their desires. This essay will present a thoughtful deliberation on this matter , followed by a conclusion.
On one hand, Some university students are looking for means to attain a job after graduating or to kick-off their careers in their desired filed of study. For this students , university courses focusing primarily on practical skills and knowledge which they can capitalise on in their working lives can be more sensible than purely academic-knowledge courses. If they finish these courses with high grades, they can be sure of getting a good paying job right after they graduate that can help them financially support themselves. For example, Med schools and law schools graduates are usually able to kick off their careers right after they graduate based on the information they read upon and acquire during their university years. It is essential then to have this kind of education in certain universities for the large sector of the population who wish to attain a job after graduation.
On the other hand, Some individuals who already managed to attain a job or are already involved in a certain working field might wish to expand their knowledge on other subjects. These subjects might not necessarily entail information that is pragmatic to their working lives ,but they are rather subjects that allow them to better understand life, its meaning and some of its aesthetic components. For Instance, many individuals nowadays grow an interest on psychology and/or arts despite having a different unrelated job . For these individuals, Universities can act as a mere provider of knowledge for its own sake.
In conclusion, the main function of university should be to provide knowledge of all types to students whether purely academic and irrelevant to their working lives or not. and This can be solely decided on by students themselves and their courses choice.

The introduction is “satisfactory” but contains errors and is overlong. TA – medicine & law are not typical examples of subjects that require “workplace” skills & I;m not sure para 3 is true. Para 3 also misses the main point of non-vocational course. Overall, your answer is very ‘general’// CC – a sense of development and excellent cohesion// LR – the introduction detracts from the quality of the rest of the essay. A “good paying job” also isn’t ‘right. Spelling isn’t perfect’// G – this is difficult to assess because the main weakness is in punctuation and I don;t know if these are typos or a lack of control. Otherwise, grammar is accurate with correct verb patterns, But is the enough evidence to award a high band? No use of the passive. One use of relative pronouns and no participle clauses. One use of a first conditional.
So, I’d say:
//TA – 6
//CC – 8
// LR – 7 (the potential for 8+)
// G – 6 (easily 7 or perhaps 8 without the punctuation errors)
//Overall = 7.0 (could be higher with more control).
