Consumer goods have become the most important part of people’s lives. Do the advantages outweigh disadvantages?

Sample Band 7 Answer
With our world turning into a consumer-driven society, many people have long been placing a high value on consumer goods. As a result, these products have already become a significant part of our lives. This essay will show that the benefits of this exceed its drawbacks.
There are many downsides to having a consumer society, among which the primary one is that as the demand for a wide variety of goods is increasing, a lot of businessmen are now willing to make their products available at any cost. As a result, some traders have, so far, been smuggling contraband goods which leaves them in breach of the law, thus causing the loss of a colossal amount of money. However, as it could be controlled over by calling for tighter regulations, governments of every stripe can successfully cope with this problem.
Those opposed to this say that having consumer goods as a vitally important part of our lives is wildly beneficial to the economy of any country. This is primarily because, it is consumers who demand goods and services, hence ensuring that a large number of people get employed by businesses producing necessary goods for customers. Apparently, if it were not for the goods or services demanded, many people would now be out of work. For example, consumer spending on goods and services makes up nearly 70% of the GDP of the USA. Apart from this, customers currently have a tremendous amount of choice in the marketplace where there is a stunning range of products under many different names which makes big businesses tons of money. Thus, it is clear that a rampant consumerism, by its very nature, works very well for capitalists, economists and corporations.
On balance, although living in a consumer society may needlessly result in the sales of illegal goods, the demerits of a consumerism are overshadowed by its merits in light of job opportunities it offers and the benefits it brings to the economy of the particular country.

Another ‘odd’ question. TA – para 2 is a ‘mini essay’ that raises more questions than it answers. Para 3 is an economics essay, Where do you consider “a significant part of our lives.”? The whole answer is far too general// CC – this is difficult to assess because your essay doesn’t really “say” anything. I feel para 2 is truly awful in terms of content and the ideas don’t go together// LR – “rampant” usually has a negative connotation (out of control) yet you use it in a positive context. I don’t recall “demerits” being often used by native speakers. “governments of every stripe”? – I;m guessing you are referring to ranking// G – I’d like a participle clause or two
So, I’d say:
//TA – 5 (because of the focus of the conclusion)
// CC – 6 (para 2)
// LR – 8
// G – 9
//Overall = 7.0. (I feel the question doesn’t match the marking criteria or you have misinterpreted the question).
